It is time to dig the clubs out and get them dusted off. This is also the perfect time to check the condition of your grips. The dry winter months have undoubtedly taken their toll on them. Whether stored in the house, garage, or even worse yet, your car trunk, most grips are ready for replacement after the winter. I see many golfers who try to get some extended play with old worn-out grips.

It is always one of the most anticipated events of the entire year. That anticipation has only grown, as the pandemic forced the April event to be rescheduled to November. Regardless of when the tournament is played, you can be sure the eyes of the golfing world will be on Augusta.
When it comes to the Masters Tournament, there is one thing you can always count on; there will be plenty of drama. Whether played in April or November, it will undoubtedly come down to the back 9 on Sunday!

The season-closing event was played last Saturday (10/17). Scoring was very tight as every team in the field finished within 4 strokes of the winners. As we all know, most tournaments come down to putting. After the T.N.T. Field Day scheduled for tomorrow and the re-scheduled Member-Guest next Friday (10/23), the official 2020 tournament season will be over.

Ben Scott and Dan Trainor won the final major tournament of the year, the annual Member-Member.
After an opening round of 63, the pair continued their steady play in the second round firing 67 for a two-day total of 130. Like the Masters, this Member-Member came down to the back nine on Sunday. Coming from behind and emerging from a tight leaderboard, John Taves and Steve Geldart mounted quite a back-nine charge.

In Flight A, John Taves and Steve Geldart continued their domination of this tournament, winning this event for an unbelievable 4th consecutive year. With a team score of 132 (-10), the pair edged out the runner-up team of T.J. Lombardini and Steve Jepsen (133) by a single stroke. Joel Taves and Matt Taves shot 140 and finished in 3rd place.

Two roads to one destination. Last weekend, Steve got there with two relatively comfortable wins. A 4&3 win on Saturday over Jim Osten and a 6&5 semi-final win over Dan McCarthy. Jack got there with two come from behind wins, both taking extra holes. On Saturday, it took 19 holes to edge out Mike Kjelsberg, and on Sunday’s semi-final match, once again, it took 19 holes to get by Tom Busa.
The final match should come right down to the wire as Jack, the winner in 2015, takes on Steve, the 2019, and defending Champion.

A score of 38 gave Mike a slim 1 stroke lead over Max Tay (39) and Liam Manning, just another shot back (40) with 9 to play. The Memorial Scholarship Pro-Am Results
Last Sunday, we had a record 74 golfers tee it up for "the cause". Thanks to the tournament participants and the incredibly generous donations received from members, the event raised $7,395 for the club's scholarship fund. That is the 2nd highest dollar total ever raised in this event! I wish to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who participated in or donated to this year's fundraising effort. Each year the club awards scholarships to a Lexington High School golf team member and to qualifying employees and competitive junior golfers of the club.

Club Championship and Senior Club Championship
Last weekend Nicholas Manning won the Men’s Club Championship by 2 strokes over runner-up and defending Champion, Brian DelGreco.
Nicholas followed an opening round of 73 with a 1 over par score of 72. Going into the final round, his 145 total gave him a 2 stroke lead over Steve Geldart (78-69=147) and a 3 stroke lead over Brian (72-76=148). After 36 holes, the trio had separated themselves from the field and played the final round head to head.

A clutch birdie on the final hole put an exclamation mark on his winning score of 141 (-1). Jim Harding finished solo second 3 shots back after following up his opening-round 72 with a 71 (the low round on day 2). Breezy conditions and some tricky pin positions made for some higher than normal scoring in round 1 of the Mid-Summer Classic. One team, however, did not get that memo. In the best-ball format, Tom Busa and Joe Bianco shot a low round of the day blistering LGC with an incredible score of 56 (-15). Albeit delayed, the year’s first “Major” tournament is in the books. Last weekend we played the Paul Revere Cup with several players displaying some mid-season form.
Dan Trainor played through several rain delays on Sunday but kept his focus to shoot 64 net and win the 2020 Paul Revere Cup. (His gross score of 73 represented a career-best.) Tony Battaglia shot 67 to finish alone in 2nd. Dick Volpicelli, Jim Harding, and Mike Morrissey all shot 68 to share 3rd place.

We took one more baby step towards normalcy at LGC with the start of the TNT season last Tuesday!
Friday Twi will be starting today, and some other Pro Shop tournaments will also soon be starting. Looking forward to the playing of some of our traditional "major" tournaments, we will need to get away from the 15-minute mandate. That restriction does not allow for enough tee time capacity to handle a full field 18-hole event.

According to the National Golf Foundation, only 4 states are remaining that continue to have a ban on golf. Sadly for us, Massachusetts is one of them. (M.D., N.H., and V.T. are the others).
By now we have all heard the disappointing news that the governor has extended his ban on golf at least until May 18th. This extension will hurt the most as we start to get some excellent spring golf weather.

Even though golf courses have been ordered shut statewide, a work waiver has been issued that enables ground crews to continue to work and perform regular maintenance. Bob and his team have been working hard on course cleanup. The greens have been aerified, and no doubt, the course will be ready to go once the season starts.

Last week I made my annual trip to the golf trade show in Orlando. The show is impressive in its scope. If you watched any of the coverage on The Golf Channel, you have some idea of just how massive this trade show is. Anything and everything related to golf is on display. After an opening round of 63, the pair continued their steady golf on day 2, posting a two day total of 127 (63-64). That was good for a 2-stroke margin of victory over round 1 leaders John Taves and Steve Geldart. The talk of the tournament on day one was the incredible bogey-free round scripted by John Taves. His gross score of 65 (4 birdies and an eagle!) led the team to a net score of 60 and a 3 shot lead. Steve Potter and Peter Chamberlain squared off in the finals of the Handicap Championship last weekend. Peter found himself down early losing 3 of the first 4 holes. By the turn, Steve had a comfortable 4 up lead. Peter was able to narrow the gap winning the 11th and 12th holes, but could not sustain the comeback losing the 13th hole. When Steve made birdie on the 15th hole the match was over, and Steve had won his second Handicap Championship 4&3.

Steve Potter will play Peter Chamberlain for the Handicap Championship. Both players won close matches that went the distance to advance to the finals. Steve beat Jim Magliozzi 1up to advance, and Peter finished 2up after winning the 18th hole in his match against 2014 Champion Chris Manning.

Last Sunday we had a record 80 golfers tee it up for "the cause".
Thanks to the tournament participants and the incredibly generous donations received from members, the event shattered last year’s all-time record by over 20%. All told, we raised $7,570 for the club's scholarship fund. I wish to extend a heartfelt THANK-YOU to everyone who participated in or donated to this year’s fundraising effort. Each year the club awards scholarships to a Lexington High School golf team member and qualifying employees and competitive junior golfers of the club.

The Ladies Club Championship was played last week-end. Ally Dunn played lights-out in winning her 5th Club Championship title. Her winning score of 150 included a first-round 74, which came within 1 stroke of tying the women’s course record held by former member Sue Curtin (73). On Sunday she made another run at the course record, settling for a 76 after an unfortunate 8 on the final hole. Playing partners Carolyn Murphy (runner-up), Laura Wilczewski (3rd), and Deb Fisher (4th) had a front-row seat to Ally’s extraordinary play!

Tough conditions for round 1 of the Mid-Summer Classic produced some higher than normal scoring. In the best-ball format, Steve Jepsen and TJ Lombardini shot the low round of the day with 63 (-8). Dave Riley and Steve Potter teamed for a 65 (-6) and solo 2nd. After that, it was a very crowded leaderboard with eight teams at 68 or better. As it usually does, the difficult and unpredictable Chapman format of day two would determine the 2019 Champions.

With a clutch birdie on the final hole, his final score of 145 was good for a 1 stroke victory over defending champion Steve Jepsen (73-73=146). Bill McAlduff had a 2 day total of 147, good for solo 3rd.

Dick Volpicelli ran away from the field in the 65+ division. His score of 132 (66-66) was good for a 7 stroke margin of victory over runner-up Dave Riley (67-72=139). Peter Scully shot a 2 day total of 140 (70-70), good third place, and Jim Travers (73-68=141) finished in 4th another stroke back.

Last weekend we played the Paul Revere Cup. Saturday started out a bit wet, and with cool and breezy conditions persisting throughout both weekend days, low scores were few and far between. Despite an opening hole double bogey, Steve Keegan quickly turned things around to shoot a net 69 and win the event. Henry Liu (70) and Dan Brennan (70) finished tied for 2nd place 1 stoke back. After today’s Member-Guest and the official tournament season closer, the T.N.T. Field Day tomorrow, the 2018 tournament schedule will be over.
Of course, that by no means is the end of the golfing season. We will have lots of great golfing days to take advantage of well into November!

The tournament schedule has just about wrapped up for the season, but there are still a few events remaining.
This weekend we have the last “Major” of the year. The Member-Member is a 36 hole net medal tournament. Chris and Liam Manning will be trying to defend the title they won last year.

Dave Riley and Steve Jepsen squared off in the finals of the Handicap Championship last weekend. Dave won the first hole of the day, and by the 9th hole, the lead was 3. Walking off the 13th hole, Dave had a comfortable 4up lead with just 5 holes to play. That is when Steve went to work. After a run of 3 straight pars, Steve rolled in a long birdie put on the 17th to close the gap to 1, with 1 to play. After both players made par on the 18th, Dave had held off Steve to win 1up.
In the consolation match, John Taves won by default over Peter Manning.

Handicap Championship finals set:
Dave Riley will play Steve Jepsen for the Handicap Championship. Both players won close matches to advance to the finals. Dave beat Peter Manning 3&1 and Steve advanced after a narrow 2&1 victory against the defending champion John Taves. Dave Riley was the medalist in the qualifying round, has won this title in 2001 & 2008, and was runner-up in 2013. Steve has never made it to the finals but has been playing great golf all season. I am sure it will be a close match right to the end. Good luck to both finalists!

Mark Bianco & Gary Siegel win the Peter Manning Bowl in a play-off. The duo fired a brilliant 61 (-10), but it was not quite enough, as the team of Steve Champagne and Tom Walsh matched the effort with a 61 of their own. The two teams headed back down the first hole for a sudden-death playoff.

Last Sunday we had a record 77 golfers tee it up for "the cause". Thanks to the tournament participants and the extremely generous donations received from members, the event raised an all-time record. All told, we raised $6,225 for the club's scholarship fund. I wish to extend a heartfelt THANK-YOU to everyone who participated in or donated to this year’s fundraising effort. Each year the club awards scholarships to a Lexington High School golf team member and to qualifying employees of the club.

It is not too late to join us for the Memorial Scholarship Tournament. The weather forecast is fantastic, a great cause, pick your own tee time AM or PM, pick your own team (or we can find you one), breakfast-lunch-and cocktail party, prizes, the last chance to play the greens at LGC before aerification . . . if you would like to play, or need more reasons why you should, please call the Pro Shop.

We have just 1 more spot open for the 2 day member-guest tournament which starts on Friday.
5 teams are on standby, as we hope fill out an additional flight for the tournament.
Please contact the Pro Shop as soon as possible if you would like to participate in our annual flagship event..
You will get to play the golf course in peak condition. You will enjoy some great camaraderie and competition. And you will You will be making 10 other potential participants very happy!
